AUGUST 17 - Pencil Day

Did you ever wonder why pencils are yellow? No, it's not because it makes it easier to find them! During the 1800s the graphite used to make pencils was from China, which was the best in the world. In China, the color yellow represents respect and royalty. So, manufacturers painted their pencils yellow to signal that they were using Chinese graphite. To this day, seventy-five percent of the pencils sold in the United States are painted yellow. A great game to play with unsharpened pencils is “pick up sticks.” So gather up the family and play this oldie but goody! More pencil trivia: The modern day pencil evolved from writing instruments that were used in Ancient Rome. Learn all there is to know about the pencil.

August 22-Be An Angel Day

You can’t make a snow angel in August, but you can make a sand angel. Today’s the perfect day to head to the beach or a sandbox and flap away. And when you plop your little one into the tub to wash away the sand, use all those wonderful suds and bubbles to make a fluffy halo and wings.

Odie

AUGUST 8 - Dollar Day. Assistance Dog Day. Odie's Day

Commemorate the invention of the dollar by taking your child to the 99 Cent store for a little shopping. This is a great way to start teaching your child about money and how far it goes. When you get home, play store with a toy cash register and play money. Your youngster will have fun while having a lesson in math!

Happy Odie Day. Learn all about Garfield's nemesis at Planet Odie

Today we honor all the Asssistance Dogs - seeing eye dogs, seizure alert dogs, hearing dogs, migraine alert dogs dogs and even dogs that help kids learn how to read.

Seeing Eye/Guide dogs have been in the U.S. for over 75 years, the other types of Assistance Dog programs have only been in existence since the early 70s. Watch these Service Dog Videos to get an idea of some of the things these wonderful dogs can do. Some of the best service dogs are Pit Bulls. Read this piece from CBS on service dogs for veterans. AUGUST 11 - President's Jokes Day. Smile Week

In 1963, a man named Harvey Ball came up with the now oh-so-familiar smiley face.

Many people believe that President's jokes day is a day to make jokes about the president. On the contrary, this day is for presidents to make a joke. On this day in 1984, President Ronald Reagan made a doozie. On August 11, 1984, just before his regular Saturday radio address, President Ronald Reagan was doing a voice test with the microphone. He thought the microphone and the feed was not live. He joked into the microphone: "My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes." To his surprise, he was speaking to a live feed! Here is a site filled with

AUGUST 13 -  International Left Hander's Day

Today is the day for all of us lefties to celebrate our uniqueness. About 13% (hmmm) of the population is left-handed, and it tends to run in families.

Left handers tend to be creative and visual thinkers because they are right brain dominant. The right side of the brain which is where music, creativity and imagination live.

According to
lefthandersday.com 5 out of the 5 designer of the first Macintosh were lefties.

So, with all these advantages, why is it so hard to find a pair of left handed scissors?

AUGUST 15 - National Relaxation Day

Forget the chores and devote the entire day to kicking back and enjoying your child’s company. Swing in a hammock, hang out in bed and read for hours, or take a long walk. It’s amazing how enriching one-on-one time can be when you stop thinking about all the mundane stuff you need to get done. The laundry will still be there tomorrow, but childhood goes by all too quickly!
