FEBRUARY 16 - 911 birthday
There used to be a separate telephone number for fire, police and medical emergencies. In 1968, 9-1-1 was established as a central number to call for all types of emergencies.
Teach children how and when to call 9-1-1. Talk to them about who the emergency workers are in your community- police officers, firefighters, paramedics, etc, and what kinds of things they do to help people. Role play with your child to practice what to do in an emergency.
Teach them to say nine-one-one when they learn to dial the phone number. That way, they won’t look for the 11(eleven) key on the phone.
Explain to your children that the 9-1-1- operator is a friend and someone to help them in an emergency. Help them understand what is an emergency that requires a 9-1-1 call (such as a fire or an unconscious family member) and what isn’t (a skinned knee or a lost pet.) Make sure your child understands never to call 911 for fun or as a joke, but only in a real emergency. However, if your child is in doubt and there is no adult to ask, they should always make the call.

FEBRUARY 17-Random acts of kindness day
Everyone benefits from kindness - both the giver and the receiver. So go with your child and bring some joy. Perhaps a neighbor needs some help with their groceries or bringing in the trash cans. Or bring some flowers and visit a senior center. The residents always are happy to see a young smiling face. Try doing something nice for a sibling - letting a younger sibling play with a special toy, or helping with homework. Or a younger sibling not intruding an older child's play date.

February 8-Laugh and Grow Rich Day, Boy Scout Anniversary
Laugh with your children and enrich your spirits. Babies start to laugh when they are around four months old. Laughter is universal and contagious. A game of peek-a-boo is bound to inspire laughter. Cover your face and ask “Where’s Mommy?” (or Daddy, etc.) Wait about three seconds before taking your hands away. Try this traditional rhyme:
Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo, Who’s that hiding there? Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo (Child’s name)’s behind the chair!
Thank you Dr. Cindy!
