AUGUST 21 - World Daffodil Day. National Homeless Animals Day. Hawaii Admission Day

In 1959, President Eisenhower signed a proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state. Celebrate by having a Hawaiian luau.

Go to a party store and get some hula skirts, leis, and tropical paper tablecloths.

You can make your own hula skirts out of green trash bags.

Use the bottom of the bag as the waistband and cut the bags in strips stopping an inch below the waistband.

  • You can also use butcher block paper for the table cloth and decorate it by painting Hawaiian icons such as palm trees, flowers, and fish.
  • Dance the hula
  • Do the limbo
  • Top drinks with tiny festive paper umbrellas
  • Serve lots of tropical fruit such as coconuts, papaya, pineapple, mangoes and bananas.
  • Play Ukulele music.

And don’t forget to welcome your guests with a big “Aloha!”

National Homeless Animals Day calls attention to the 8 million animals who will enter a shelter annually in the United States. Animal rescue groups report that more animals than ever before are being put to sleep due to shortage of homes. Gather or make pet toys with your kids.  Then go to to the local animal shelter together to donate the toys.

AUGUST 7 - National Mustard Day, Sea Serpent Day

Children are fascinated by imaginary creatures, so imagine how excited they will be to “grow” a sea serpent of their very own. It takes a little patience to see the full results of this project, but the magical results are worth it!

Grow a Sea Serpent
  • Give your child a plastic cup and have him or her decorate it like the head of a sea serpent, using paint, feathers, glue, or any craft materials you have around.
  • Fill the cup with moistened cotton balls, then sprinkle the cotton balls with grass seeds.
  • In a few days, the grass will sprout, creating a grassy head of green spikes.

Throw a
Sea Serpent Party! and enjoy delicious Honeydew Melon Sea Serpents and other Nessie- esque treats.

Mustard is a favorite on hot- dogs, corn beef and pastrami. What kind of mustard do your kids like best?

Mustard Tasting Party
  • Have each child bring a type of mustard.
  • Put the different types in different paper cups. Label the cups with a number.
  • Have the kids close their eyes as they dip a favorite vegetable or meat into the mustards to try them.
  • Vote on the ones everyone likes best.
  • After the voting, reveal which mustards are which.
Then enjoy some burgers and hotdogs with - what else? - Mustard!

The earliest known lighthouse was the Lighthouse of Alexandria, on the island of Pharos. It was built in the third century BCE to assist sailors. If you're on a coast this summer, take the kids to see a lighthouse.
