OCTOBER 8 –National pierogi day, american touch tag day, world egg day, RL Stine birthday

If you've never eaten pierogi, you are in for a treat. What's a pierogi? It is a Polish won ton - boiled, steamed or fried. . Try these delicious Pierogi Recipes from AllRecipes.com

This is the day egg industries throughout the world celebrate the natural nutrition, versatility, convenience, and economy of eggs and egg products.

You can show just how versatile eggs are by using their shells in an art project. Fill a quart container with eggshells, and then spray them with a mixture of water and bleach to kill any germs.

Once they are dry, break the eggshells and dye them different colors by placing the fragments in bowls of food coloring. Dry the eggshells thoroughly.

Create unusual mosaics by gluing the pieces onto construction paper.

Egg Trivia: Did you know that white eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and ear lobes, and brown eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red ear lobes?

Where would the world be without RL Stine? It would certainly be a less deliciously scary place without the hundreds of "Goose Bump" books. If your child hasn't been sufficiently scared after reading the books, check out these
spooky games at the RLStine website.

OCTOBER 9 –Leif Erikson day, Universal Music day, World post day, Fire prevention day

World Post Day commemorates setting up world-wide standanrds and for the delivery of mail around the world through the set up of the Universal Postal Union in 1863. As more countries joined , the Universal Postal Union became a specialized agency within the United Nations.

One way to introduce your child to other cultures by writing letters to a penpal .
Students of the World is an organization that helps students find penpals from other countries who are the same age. While in today's world of texting and emailing, there is something very special about receiving a paper letter. In addition to having a new friend, think of all the great stamps your child will be able to collect.

500 years before Christopher Columbus, Leif Erikson, who was a Norse explorer, is believed to be the first European to land in North America. The BBC has put together a very kid-friendly and and interesting site to introduce your kids to the lives of the Vikings

Universal Music Day is all about celebrating making music! Music is a universal language that anyone can speak. So grab your pots and pans, maracas, recorders and ukuleles and make some music.

Each year, over 20,000 people in the US are injured in fires. Children make up 15-20% of fire deaths. Children are naturally curious about fire. Here are some tips from the US Fire Administration on teaching young children about fire and keeping them safe.

OCTOBER 14 –World sight day, Lois Lenski birthday

Lois Lenski is one of my favorite classic storytellers. She considered herself an artist first, and was the illustrator of the original The Little Engine That Could, pictures by Lois Lenski. Here are a few of my favorites:

Mr. and Mrs. Noah (Lois Lenski Books)
Now It's Fall (Lois Lenski Books)

World Sight Day brings attention to the problems of blindness and vision impairment in the world. According to WHO:

  • 153 million people are visually impaired because of uncorrected refractive errors (uncorrected near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism). In most cases, normal vision could be restored with eye glasses.
  • Up to 80% of blindness and 85% of moderate and severe visual impairment is avoidable by prevention, treatment or cure
  • Almost 90% of blind people live in low-income countries

Kids can help by organizing a collection of old, still in good condition eyeglasses. This is a project, where kids can understand a tangible benefit to their generosity. There are a couple of charities that will pass them along.
Unite for Sight will distribute glasses to kids in adults in Africa and One Sight helps in North America.

OCTOBER 17 –Mulligan day, world toy camera day, wear something gaudy day

What is a Mulligan anyhow? It's a term that comes from golf. It means you can take your turn over, and try again. We all learn from making mistakes. Especially when we "try, try again."

On World Toy Camera Day, photographers share the pictures they've taken with toy cameras. Older kids might like to build their own toy camera. Ehow explains how to
make a pinhole camera

Time to throw good taste out the window! Your goal? To become a “fashion don’t.” Let your child pile on as many clothes and accessories as he or she wants, regardless of color, pattern, or style. Head to your own closet and do the same. Have a gaudy fashion show and take turns snapping photos of each other in your outrageous attire.

OCTOBER 19 –Ed Emberly birthday Hagfish Day

Born in 1931, artist Ed Emberly has written 80 books for kids. He believed everyone should be able to learn to draw and he's most famous for his drawing books. (He's the guy who created the fingerprint drawing book). Visit his website for some artful fun.

What is a hagfish? And why do we have hagfish day? According to Wikipedia, "Hagfish are marine craniates of the class Agnatha or Myxini, also known as Hyperotreti. " Apparently the people at WhaleTimes created hagfish day to celebrate the "beauty of ugly" And what is it that hagfish do? They ooze slime. Check out this video of hagfish slime.

OCTOBER 21– International stuttering awareness day, Count your buttons day

When you go to your childs closet this morning, choose something with buttons. Count your buttons as you or your child fastens each one. Go on a “button hunt” and count how many objects with buttons you can find (pillows, purses, toys etc.) Create a piece of art by gluing buttons of different colors, sizes, and designs onto construction paper. (Supervise closely because buttons are choking hazards.)

Invite some friends over to play a game of “Button, Button, Who’s Got the Button?” To play- someone hides the button while the other players cover their eyes or go in another room. Then the search begins. Tell the players who is getting close to the button by calling “Name of Child is getting warm, warmer, hot” When someone is going the wrong way, call out “Name of Child is getting cold, colder or ice cold” The person who finds the button, gets to hide it for the next round.

OCTOBER 31– Halloween, National caramel apple day, National knock knock jokes day, National UNICEF day, Carve a pumpkin day

Knock Knock.
Who's there?
Witch.
Witch who?
Witch you a happy Halloween!

Halloween” comes from the name “All Hallow’s Eve.” All Hallows Eve is the night that precedes “All Hallow’s Day” (also known as “All Saints Day”), which is a holiday observed by the Roman Catholic Church. The rituals associated with Halloween, however, find their roots in the fifth century B.C. with the Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Brittany. The Celtic New Year began on November 1, and on the night before, the Celts believed that the souls of the dead came back to earth looking for a body to inhabit for the coming year. In order to ward them off, the people wore masks and built bonfires. Later, when the Romans conquered the Celts, other traditions were added, such as apple offerings and cider.

If you are having a party for kids at your house, they may enjoy some delicious homemade caramel apples. This
Caramel Apple recipe from Simply Recipes Once the apples have cooled a little, the kids can roll them in chopped nuts, chocolate chips or sprinkles.

This year celebrates the 60th anniversary of Trick or Treat for Unicef. Kids collecting money on Halloween have raised over 160 million to help kids around the world. Learn how your kids can participate!

OCTOBER 5 – World teacher day, Balloons around the world day, Do something nice day

Balloons around the world day celebrates balloon artists. Here are some amazing balloon art photos

Does your child have a favorite teacher? World teacher day is a wonderful opportunity to let your child's teacher know much they are appreciated. An average teacher spends over $500 of their own money buying supplies for their classrooms each year. Get together with other parents, and get a gift card for your teacher to buy class supplies. Stores like Walmart and Target have programs to give back to schools. Or, get a wish list from the teacher. You'll be doing something nice and will  be helping both your teacher and benefiting your child's education.

Wear whatever makes you laugh. Family Fun shows you how to make some very Silly Hats out of brown paper bags.
