SEPTEMBER 26 – Johnny Appleseed’s birthday, Family day (a day to have dinner with your kids)

The apple first appeared in America around 1630. Apples became widespread due to the work of John Chapman, also known as Johnny Appleseed, who planted orchards and sold apple tree saplings. Today we can find apples growing in every corner of the country. Apples are a good source of pectin, known to reduce blood cholesterol levels. They also supply vitamin C and potassium, and other vital nutrients, including calcium, iron, vitamin A, thiamin, magnesium, and phosphorus.

Make this adorable
Peekaboo apple craft from Kaboose using simple materials.

It turns out that eating dinner together is not just fun, it's an important time for families to reconnect. Studies have shown that kids in families that eat dinner together are:
  • Less likely to get involved with illegal drugs
  • Less likely to have eating disorders
  • More likely to go to college
  • More likely to have lifelong good eating habits.
While having a home-cooked meal together every night is not always practical - the eating together part is in some ways more important than what you ate. So - if you're pressed for time and don't always have time to cook (and we all are) call for a pizza or grab something prepared.

What should you talk about at dinner? Here are some tips on keeping the conversation going!

  • Ask everyone to share their favorite part or biggest challenge of the day.
  • Plan and then let the kids pick tasks for the next day's menu, preparation, and cleanup.
  • Exchange memories about your favorite family pastimes.
  • Discuss an activity the family can do together and then put it on the calendar.
  • Talk with your children about a book they are reading or a movie they have seen. It might turn into a family book club or a regular movie and popcorn night!
  • Ask the kids about their classes, homework, teachers, and upcoming assignments. Find out if they would like your help or want to brainstorm on an assignment.

SEPTEMBER 28– National good neighbor day, Ask a stupid question day

I have always been told that there is no such thing as a stupid question. But, most of us have experienced not wanting to appear stupid by asking a question. Use today, Ask a Stupid Question Day, to encourage your kids to ask questions both at home and at school.

This simple act will help them keep their natural curiosity and remain active, information seeking learners.

Do you know your neighbors? Take the time on National Good Neighbor Day to say thank you and let your neighbors know that you appreciate them. If you have the time, bring over some cookies or brownies, or fresh fruit from your tree. Your neighbors will surely appreciate it.

SEPTEMBER 6 - Play Day

Playing is the work of children, yet simple unstructured just-for-fun play has largely been replaced by classes, leagues and competition.  Playing is good for both kids (and adults).

Introduce your kids to some games they can play outdoors in the beautiful days of autumn.

Red Light, Green Light
One person is “it”. The other kids line up away from "it", facing "it" - 10 to 20 feet should do it. "It' turns around with his back facing the other kids and shouts "Green Light!"  The other kids walk or run towards "it."   Then, it shouts "Red Light!" and turns around.   Anyone that "it" catches moving, moves back to the start line.  This is repeated until someone tags "it". The first one to tag "it" becomes the new "it."

Statue
One person is "it." She takes each of the other players (one at a time) by the hand and turns in a circle spinning the person and then letting go.  That person freezes into a statue in whatever funny pose they land in.   The first person to move becomes "it".

Leapfrog
One person crouches down and touches their hands to the ground in front of them.   The person behindthem "leaps" over them by standing behind them, putting their hands on the back of the person in front and jumps over them with their legs on either side of the person.   This is most fun with a group of kids.
