Growing up in LA, I’ve always been fortunate to have access to a large, wonderful zoo. Going to the zoo is always a fun day with the kids – with the added educational benefits.
What I never realized is how much zoos have to offer. Zoos have become a cornerstone for the protection and preservation of endangered species, and a key resource for teaching our kids about animals, our environment and about the world around them (aka science).Zoos offer everything from storytimes to age-specific classes, to camps, to birthday parties to opportunities for teens to volunteer and explore careers. Zoos also offer wonderful adventures – overnight sleepovers, camps, travel opportunities, birthday parties, live music and lots of great events. Some even offer full time preschools, after- school programs and special home school curricula. Some zoos specialize – reptiles, bats, alligators, cranes, kangaroos, wolves, tortoises, big cats. There is even one zoo located in a high school!
